It's nice of you, Kathy, to do all the heavy lifting that the History Channel, and most of their science/tech documentaries, cannot be bothered with.

The American Civil War, of the 1860s, as well as the associated practice of Slavery, probably never would have happened, had *the development of automation* proceeded more rapidly. Think about it. Suppose you needed to dig a trench, 4-feet wide and 60-feet long. If you had a modern diesel-powered excavator, then ONE GUY could complete the task inside of ONE day. With such a machine available to you, you would never go to the trouble to round-up 100 slaves, hand out the picks and shovels, for the purpose of accomplishing the identical task. The processing of slaves would be WAY too much bother, compared to having ONLY ONE GUY jump into the seat of an excavator.

In mathematics, *a field* is the situation you have when, relative to a set of numbers, and a specified mathematical operation (such as addition), you can take any two numbers from the set, apply the specified mathematical operation, and the result will always yield a number that is already a member of the indicated set of numbers.

I often wonder if Steinmetz's concept of Phasors, which includes that a sinusoidal signal on a wire can have a leading or a lagging Power Factor (or even a phase shift of zero) was actually another way of presenting the combined RLC aspect of Heaviside's Telegrapher's Equation.

Do you suppose that any of the people who make glamourous (but wrong) documentaries for the HISTORY Channel will order Kathy's book?

Every circuit has both capacitance and inductance as well as resistance. There's an RC time constant and an RL time constant. It's easy to work out if you know the values of R L and C

"Electromagnetic Fields and Waves" by Lorrain & Corson (2nd Edition) contains a problem in chapter 2 "Electrostatic Fields in a Vacuum" (2-19) on J.J. Thomson's "Plum Pudding" model of the atom. It asks to (A) find the force on an electron; (B) describe its motion; (C) the frequency for a 1 Angstrom-sized atom; and (D) compare this frequency to that of visible light. A rather thought-provoking question in an Undergraduate E&M textbook!
